Grants

Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG)
Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) merged the Byrne and Local Law Enforcement Block Grant(LLEBG)Grants. The JAG grant is available through OCJS. The JAG Grant requires a 25% match for your project. Therefore an approved project to purchase four MDT for $5,000 each, for a total of $20,000, the subgrantee, i.e., the City or Village, will need to pay $2500 for the first 25% and OCJS will pay the remaining $17,500.
All grants through OCJS now require departments to submit Ohio Incident Based Reporting Statistics (OIBRS). Typically your Records Management System (RMS) system does this for you, if your agency does not have an RMS system, OCJS offer the Law Enforcement Officers Toolkit (LEOT) for $350 a year or OHLEG-RMS which is free.
Justice Assistance Grant Law Enforcement (JAG LE)
The Justice Assistance Grant Law Enforcement (JAG LE) is even better than the full JAG version as it only requires a 10% match. Therefore a project to purchase four $5000 MDT's will only require the City to pickup $2000 of the total cost. Unlike the above full JAG grant, the JAG-LE grant has typically been limited to a maximum reimbursement of $20,000 from OCJS.
My department has been successful in recieving several of these grants over the years from OCJS. We have used JAG and JAG-LE grants or their predecessors under the name LLEBG to buy Toughbook computers for the cruisers including, printers, drivers license swipers, mounting hardware. Justice Assistance Grants have also paid for the LEOT software, computer servers, ilincs connectivity, radio scanners, security cameras, digital fingerprinting equipment, computer forensics equipment, etc.
